Soundboard Scholar

A Peer-Reviewed Journal of Guitar Studies

Soundboard Scholar No. 5

Mission

Soundboard Scholar is the peer-reviewed journal of the Guitar Foundation of America. Its purpose is to publish guitar research of the highest caliber. Soundboard Scholar is a forum for all scholarly fields of the guitar, including historical research, historiography, music analysis, performance studies, and pedagogy. Especially welcome are articles that connect the guitar world with current trends in mainstream musical scholarship, and articles that connect non-specialists to the knowledge and insights that scholarly inquiry has to offer.

Production

Founded in 2015 by Dr. Thomas Heck, Soundboard Scholar is published annually. Each edition is printed on high-quality paper copy; back issues are always available on demand as digital downloads. Preparations are underway to make Soundboard Scholar available in library databases.

Call for Articles

We invite submissions for our 6th issue, scheduled for Autumn 2020. As stated above, articles will be considered in any scholarly field related to the guitar. Consideration will also be given to submissions on other fretted instruments, if there is a clear connection to the guitar’s history, culture, or concert repertoire. We also welcome English translations of foreign-language research articles.

Soundboard Scholar encourages interdisciplinary research. Musicologists, analysts and other scholars whose work is not normally centered on the guitar are invited to address the guitar’s history and literature, and to point their graduate students towards this rich field of inquiry. Many areas of analysis and musicology are highly developed in the mainstream repertoire but await application to the guitar history and repertoire. For suggestions as to possible avenues of research, please contact the journal editor.
