Share |

For over four decades Ricardo Iznaola has distinguished himself as an international performing and recording artist, composer, teacher and author.

An American citizen, Maestro Iznaola was born in Havana, Cuba, and lived in Colombia, Venezuela and Spain before moving with his family to the USA in 1980. His performances achieved international acclaim since winning top prizes at eight prestigious international competitions early in his career.

His books Kitharologus - The Path to Virtuosity and On Practicing, have become standard required texts for the training of guitar professionals at many institutions. In 2013 Mel Bay Publications released the first volume of Mr. Iznaola’s eagerly anticipated Summa Kitharologica, a work without precedent in the pedagogical literature for the guitar, combining upper limb anatomical and biomechanical information with deep analysis of left- and right-hand technical procedures.

Mr. Iznaola's catalogue of compositions includes numerous works for solo guitar, chamber music with guitar, orchestral and vocal compositions. Among them, the Concert Etudes, the suite Musique de Salon, the Tríptico Criollo (for flute or violin and guitar) and the Vocalise (for female voice or cello and guitar) have been warmly received by performers and audiences across the nation.

In 1991 he founded his own recording and publishing company, IGW (Iznaola Guitar Works,, through which his recordings and publications are distributed. Recent releases include an anthology of music by Venezuelan composers, Heritage – The Guitar in Venezuela, and Mr. Iznaola’s guitar arrangement of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter’s Journey), with acclaimed basso Kenneth Cox.

In June of 2015, after 32 years of service, Ricardo Iznaola retired as Artist-In-Residence and Chair of the Guitar and Harp Department at the Lamont School of Music of the University of Denver, where he is the Distinguished University Professor in Music, the highest faculty honor bestowed by the university.
