First place-winners from any previous IYC are not eligible for the same age group.

Competitors must participate in the division corresponding with their birthdate, with the exception that past winners of the Junior Division are eligible to compete in the Senior Division if desired; however past winners of Junior and Senior Divisions may not compete in the International Concert Artist Competition (ICAC) unless they have reached the minimum age requirement of 18. Proof of age will be required of all participants.

All decisions regarding eligibility are made by the IYC Artistic Director, Lynn McGrath.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: June 8th, 2020 11:59pm EST.

Entries with all fees and application materials must be received by the GFA no later than the above deadline. No late entries will be considered. There will be no refunds of entrance fees.

PRELIMINARY ROUND REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTH DIVISIONS

Each candidate must perform the following pieces, and they may be performed in any order:

Required piece: One solo from the Heitor Villa-Lobos “Complete Works for Solo Guitar,” Editions Max Eschig.

Free Choice: A piece of 4-7 minutes length. This may include multiple movements from the same composition (for example, multiple movements from a Bach Suite, or several etudes from Leo Brouwer's Etudes Simples).

  • Tuning or pausing between pieces will not be included in the time restriction.

FINAL ROUND REQUIREMENTS FOR JUNIOR DIVISION

The final round of the Junior Division IYC will be held via pre-recorded videos.

ONLY finalists will submit FINAL ROUND videos. These will be recorded and submitted between June 20th and June 24th, with the deadline of June 24th, 11:59pm EST. The goal of the smaller recording window is to approximate the conditions of a live competition. Final round video submissions will have specific requirements to ensure that the video has been created within this time frame (see guidelines).

The same panel of three (3) judges will adjudicate the final round, and videos will be streamed publicly on Saturday, June 27th, time TBA.

All junior division finalists are required to perform a minimum of two (2) works of contrasting styles (by different composers). The pieces may be performed in any order. No works by Villa-Lobos may be included in the Final Round, but other works from the Preliminary Round may be repeated. As per preliminary round:

  • All pieces must be performed from memory.

  • Each competitor is allotted a 12-minute performance time in this round.

  • Tuning or pausing between pieces will not be included in the time restriction.

JUDGING

Judges will evaluate each competitor and will vote for their choice of the four (4) competitors from the Preliminary Round who they wish to advance to the Final Round. All votes will be tallied and the four (4) competitors with the highest votes shall advance to the Final Round. Should a tie result, judges will discuss via online conferencing, and re-vote on the tied competitors.

In the Final Round, judges will vote for each place, beginning with First then moving on to Second, Third, and Forth. No ties will be allowed in the final results. In the case of a tie during deliberation, judges will discuss and re-vote on the tied competitors via online conferencing to determine who will advance to the higher place. All decisions by the judges are final.

APPLICATION

Application and Fees must be submitted and paid ONLINE no later than June 8th, 2020 at 11:59PM EST. No late entries will be considered. You will need to include proof of age documentation and your preliminary round program information upon registration.

Registrants who fail to upload videos will not receive refunds, and the GFA reserves the right to cap registrants and close registration, or to begin a waiting list should we reach a level that poses undue logistical challenges for our judges. The previous requirement for competitors to be GFA members has been waived.

You must upload appropriate age verification with your program submittal form.

FINAL ROUND PROGRAM SUBMISSION

Only the competitors selected for the final rounds will need to submit a final round program by the Final Round Video Submission Deadline on June 24th. All finalists will be contacted on June 20th with instructions for submitting that program information. Finalist’s videos will be aired by order of random draw in the GFA IYC Final Round livestream on Saturday, June 27th.

VIDEO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Unedited, in a single shot (no edits between pieces or at any time).

  • Taken from front view, and at the same approximate height of the seated competitor.

  • Showing full guitar and upper torso, taking up at least 75% of frame.

  • Use adequate lighting and ensure sound is captured at all levels and without distortion.

  • Do not use compression or special sound effects (such as reverb, etc.).

  • Contain no added graphics/text and no speaking.

  • If possible, we suggest using a neutral background.

Videos must be submitted by the June 15th, 11:50pm EST deadline.

Instructions for NAMING and uploading the video will be provided upon successful registration for the event on or before the June 8th Registration Deadline (we are using a file sharing service). Check your email after registration for this important information.

FINAL ROUND VIDEO SUBMISSION

Finalists will follow the same procedures for the preliminary round with one exception: they will be required to start the video with a specific hand signal. Competitors will not be told what that hand signal is until June 20th, when the finalists have been announced. This ensures that the Final Round Videos are made in the week of the final round live-streaming. Finalists will be contacted on June 20th with additional procedures for providing the final round program, HD photos, and a biography.
