Victoria Guitar Society Presents Its Showcase Recital

On Saturday October 24th, at 6pm, in Saint Mary's Anglican Church in Oak Bay (1701 Elgin Street), the Victoria Guitar Society is presenting its long delayed VICTORIA SHOWCASE - CLASSICAL GUITAR and MORE!, an offering of diverse repertoire performed by local talent. The concert will be held live with physical distancing and contactless entry as well as live streamed.

From Renaissance and Baroque favourites and early vocal music, through the development of solo guitar repertoire to contemporary Cuban and Russian guitar composers, this programme has something for every music lover.

 

ANNETTE LAMPSON a soprano specializing in Folk Song through the ages and in original languages will present some John Dowland songs of the Renaissance accompanied by DOUGLAS HENSLEY an early string specialist on Renaissance lute as well as some Franz Schubert songs with Baroque guitar accompaniment.

Three classical guitarists follow the early music presentation: 

ADRIAN CHEN is an aspiring young classical guitarist at UVic. Winning the Performing Arts BC Festival in 2019, Adrian also won first prize in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival for the past three years. 

MISHA SMIRNOV graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Music in classical guitar performance and was a prizewinner in the Northwest Guitar Festival in 2017. 

SIMON FARINTOSH is beginning his Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Toronto and has garnered top awards at various competitions in Canada and the US, including 1st Prize at the 2018 Northwest Guitar Festival & Competition and 1st Prize at the 2020 Quebec International Music Competition.
