Guitar Forums and Discussion Groups

Online guitar-related forums and discussion groups number in the thousands -- over 8,600 in a recent query of groups.yahoo.com. Most have to do with the popular guitar culture surrounding acoustic and electric guitars and with new developments like Midi guitar. Here are a few forums of relevance to the classic guitar:

  • Classical Guitar Forum, a classical guitar community where all levels of enthusiasts can share advice, experiences, techniques, methods and performances. Inaugurated in October 2012 and administered as a public service by Robert Rama, who characterizes it this way: "We have a very deliberately hands-off approach to moderating the community. We trust in their maturity; we have no written rules, and we believe that the purpose of the "Admin Team" is just that: administration."
  • adult_classical_guitar-beginners, for adults who have taken up classical guitar a little later in life and want to discuss the pitfalls and successes of their adventures, share music, lessons and general knowledge.
  • ClassicalGuitarRecitalHall, a forum for classical guitarists and luthiers - beginners, professionals and everyone in between - to talk about the instrument they love, and its repertoire.
  • 10string, an online community dedicated primarily to 10-string classical guitarists, but also includes and welcomes all players of multi-string guitars regardless of musical style. On topic are all issues relating to the playing, learning, performing, tuning, recording, history, construction, and getting music & accessories for multi-string guitars. 7- through 30-string guitarists, lute & theorbo players, harp guitarists and tertz/alto guitarists are most welcome. All members are encouraged to sumbit their muti-string recordings for airing on 10-String Radio: www.live365.com/stations/320558
  • classical_guitar, for the lovers of classical guitar all around the world!!!! (Not particularly active lately.)
  • classicalguitarists, encouraging members to "Share your new pieces/repertoire, problems you may be having, talk about your teachers and students, types of guitars you have (or wish you did), organizations (such as The Society for the Preservation for the Classic Guitar, which the moderator is a chairperson for) and anything having to do with your art. Feel free..."
In addition to theme-related forums, there are city-related ones, like denver_classical_guitar, or seattleclassicalguitarscene, and nationality-related ones easily found with a Yahoo "groups" search.

Two of the most serious guitar forums online today, attracting a worldwide readership of guitarist/scholars, are the following. Matanya Ophee's contributions to both have been formative and invaluable:

  • Guitar and Lute Issues, the on-line magazine of Editions Orphée.
  • Lake Konstanz Guitar Research Meeting is a Facebook-based group that currently includes most of the serious guitar scholars in N. America and Europe.  The group meets once every two years for a long weekend on the shores of Lake Constance, either in Germany or Switzerland, to hear and present papers on a broad variety of guitar- and guitarist-related topics.  So far, meetings have been held in the late spring of 2007, 2009, 2011, and April of 2013 is the next date we will meet.  Contact Andreas Stevens or Gerhard Penn for more information.
Visitors are invited to send suggestions for additions and corrections to Thomas F. Heck.
