60 high school guitarists in Loudoun County, Virginia gave the world premiere of Cascade, by Omid Zoufounoun on February 20, 2013. The work was commissioned by the GFA with funding from the Augustine Foundation, and was given to four high schools/districts with a strong commitment to pre-college guitar education. The remaining three schools (Ramon C. Cortines High School of Visual and Performing Arts, Classen School for Advanced Studies, and the Las Vegas Academy) will perform this piece later this spring.
Loudoun County, Virginia has one of the most active guitar programs in the United States, with guitar courses offered in every middle and high school in the entire county. The students were selected from throughout the county to participate, and had just 3 rehearsals to put the piece together. Dr. Kevin Vigil coordinated the event, and Dr. Miroslav Loncar conducted the premiere (both are Loudoun County teachers). The composer flew in to work with the students prior to the premier, and the evening featured tributes to Glen McCarthy, the pioneer in guitar education in neighboring Fairfax County, and the entire Loudoun County team of teachers and administrators.
