What do
you get when you blend a classical guitarist and a traditional string quartet?
You get the exciting and original Petar Jankovic Ensemble!
After many
years of touring almost exclusively as a solo classical guitarist, Petar
Jankovic broke new ground by initiating what has been called a truly unique
musical crossover. The Petar Jankovic Ensemble features a traditional
string quartet led by guitar. As an innovative, as well as a
revolutionary idea, the guitarist’s Spanish and Latin American influences meld
splendidly with the string quartet’s European musical traditions. Critics
have hailed the PJE for breaking new ground and pushing the limits of the
Chamber Music genre.
The PJE
covers a wide range of repertoire from early music jewels of Scarlatti, Vivaldi
and Boccerini, to traditional Spanish works by Albeniz, De Falla, and Granados.
Passionate Piazzolla tangos and rich Brazilian music by Gnattalli, Bellinati,
and Villa-Lobos are performed alongside exotic Balkan/Gypsy traditions, and new
classical works by contemporary composers such as Roland Dyens, Elliott Bark,
Jonathan Godfrey.
In
addition to Jankovic, the Ensemble comprises four brilliant musicians from the
prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Sophie Bird on violin 1,
Minju Kim on violin 2, Rose Wollman on viola, and Kyra Saltman on cello.
Within minutes of hearing the group, listeners will recognize the unique
character of this new musical format.
