The following time limits are all inclusive, including any time between pieces, if applicable:
Ages 10 and under: 3 minutes
Ages 11-14: 5 minutes
Ages 15-18: 7 minutes
College/Pre-Professional: 10 minutes
Adult Amateur/Enthusiast: 5 minutes
Auditions are an opportunity for aspiring guitarists, pre-professionals, and adult enthusiasts to build performance experience and get written feedback from our illustrious judges. The level can be quite high, and the goal is to have a positive learning experience, even if you are not selected to perform in the evening recital.
You need not fill the entire time provided, this is a maximum performance time. This is especially true for younger students. We encourage you to participate even if you only have one short piece ready- this is about enjoying the experience! Repertoire played in the morning audition is eligible to be selected for performance on the evening Showcase Concert. As far as suitability of repertoire, we encourage you to select what you feel represents you best, in consultation with your private teacher. There are no specific requirements.
Important On-Site Details For All Divisions:
The Audition Schedule and a copy of the Audition Form will be sent via email approximately one week prior to the Symposium. There will be at least one person selected to perform in the evening concert, per category. If you would not like to be considered for the evening concert, you can indicate that on your form. Please fill out and bring two copies of the audition form to the event. Make sure to check-in at the registration table no later than 30 minutes prior to your performance time. Please note that warm-up space is limited and might need to be shared with other participants. Because the schedule often fills up fast and needs to be settled in advance, please make sure to register before the deadline, and that it is first come, first serve (we might fill up before the deadline, so register early!). Also, do not neglect to indicate your teacher’s name on the registration, so that we can make sure that your teacher is not also your juror for that division.
10 and under and 11-14 age Divisions:
If space allows, these auditions will be held open to the public, and run like a recital. In the event it is run like a recital, teachers and parents will be allowed to observe. Applause will be permitted and encouraged at the end of the set, but not in between pieces (if applicable). All audition times are estimates. You should be prepared to go up to 10 minutes ahead of your scheduled time in case we run ahead. When the audition schedule is sent out approximately 1-week in advance, you will be informed of the times and whether or not we will have the space to allow for an audience.
A chair and music stand will be provided, though players are welcome to bring their own chair or a lower stand. All players should bring their own footstool/guitar support. One parent/guardian/teacher may assist these young students in setting up as they enter, and in carrying things out as they exit. If using a stand, please be sure that it is placed slightly to the left side of the player, so as not to block the view of the judges, as they will be trying to write feedback for each student, and seeing the hands is important. You do not need to provide copies of the scores for the jury; and playing from memory is optional. Finally, we would like to request that each student introduce him/herself to the jury, and introduce the titles of the pieces they will play. We recommend that you talk with your teachers about this, and the general format of the day, in advance to make sure that all students feel comfortable with what will be expected of them that morning.
If space allows, students are encouraged to watch the other auditions. Parents/teachers may watch the entire program, or enter/exit quietly in between players. Please, we do ask that there are no very young children in the room who can cause disruption, as we want to create and maintain an environment in which these young students can maintain their best focus.
The jury will select at least one student from each age division to perform on the evening concert. The announcement will be made at the conclusion of the College Ensemble Showcase Concert (at around 2pm). Written feedback can be picked up at the check-in table immediately following the announcement.
15-18 and College/Pre-Professional Divisions:
These auditions will not be open to the public. Parents/friends will be asked to wait outside. All audition times are approximate; and you should be ready to go up to 20 minutes ahead of your scheduled time (especially in the 11:00 hour) in case there are cancellations or we find that we are running ahead of schedule.
