GUITAR CAMARADERIE

2012 Great Lakes Guitar Festival and Competition

ROCHESTER, NY -- The annual festival and competition presented by the Great Lakes Guitar Society makes its return to Rochester. Taking place through the weekend of April 13-15, guitarists of all ages and levels along with lovers of guitar music from around the U.S. and Canada will gather to celebrate the instrument and its artistry. With events taking place in venues around the downtown area, including the Third Presbyterian Church, Bernunzio Uptown Music, and the Eastman School of Music, the heart of Rochester will be filled with the warmth and passion of the guitar.

The opening concert on Friday evening will feature the phenomenal Swedish guitarist/composer Johannes Möller. The recent 1st prize winner of the unanimously prestigious Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artists Competition, Möller will be making his stop at the festival as part of his international concert tour. The second half will feature Nicholas Goluses, "one of America’s most sought after guitarists” and Professor of Guitar at the Eastman School, performing duos with Juliana Athayde, concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Masters of their craft, the two artists will be performing a set of lively Spanish dances and impassioned tangos. The two guitarists Möller and Goluses will present master classes the following morning.

The Saturday evening concert will entirely focus on the guitar in an ensemble setting. Guitarist extraordinaire and Eastman alum Evan Drummond will collaborate with the Cuban-born pianist Orlay Alonso. They will be giving a complete performance of the epic Concierto de Toronto by the illustrious Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. In the second half, the AronBerkner Duo will present a program of flute and guitar duos in the Latin American style. Stephen Aron (guitar) and Jane Berkner (flute), who "have been captivating concert audiences for more than a decade,” will electrify audiences with fresh Latin rhythms including an original composition by the guitarist. Drummond and Aron will give master classes the following morning.

The festival will close on Sunday afternoon with the final round of the Great Lakes Guitar Competition. Come and experience the thrill of this sensational event as young guitar virtuosos compete for the top prize. Judges will include the festival artists and Rochester’s beloved mid-day host and music director of WXXI-FM 91.5/90.3 Julia Figueras. Three finalists chosen from the preliminary round will present their best and finest performances for this exciting conclusion to the festival.
Guitar aficionados and music lovers alike will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the events in various ways. The festival registration allows participants to attend all events, while the day pass is good for one full day of events. Tickets for individual concerts will be available as well.

The festival and competition is presented by the Great Lakes Guitar Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering an awareness and appreciation of the guitar and its repertoire through concerts, masterclasses, and outreach in the Great Lakes region of the United States.
