Boston GuitarFest 2013

Posted By Connie Sheu, Monday, April 15, 2013

It is with great pride that the Boston GuitarFest family and I welcome you to a "British Invasion” a.k.a. BOSTON GUITARFEST 2013, June 19thto 23rd, part VIII of our ongoing exploration of the past, present, and future of our noble instrument, its repertoire, and the greater cultural legacy that nourishes it.

I hope you will be able to join us in Boston between June 19thto 23rd for concerts, competitions, masterclasses, and much more. Registration is open, and we hope to see you either as a participant, competitor, or as an audience member at one of our many wonderful concerts. Head over toBostonGuitarFest.orgfor more information on all of our events and registration options.

This year we celebrate the birthday years of three great Albion musicians: John Dowland, "whose touch upon the lute doth ravish human sense” (Shakespeare); Benjamin Britten, composer of the iconic work "Nocturnal after John Dowland, Op. 70”; and the exalted guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, who will turn 80 a few days after our festival ends and to whom we dedicate Boston GuitarFest VIII.

I am thrilled to welcome back Oscar Ghiglia, Elena Papandreou, Richard Savino, Joaquín Clerch, harpsichordist John Gibbons, and, for the first time, the eminent lutenist Nigel North. This stellar cast will be joined by a whole orchestra of wonderful young artists, who will give us an unforgettable Emerging Artists Concert (punctuated by theatrical Shakespeare scenes) curated by Zaira Meneses on June 22.

We are profoundly grateful to the administrations of two great Boston institutions, my own New England Conservatory (presided over by our own British born president, Tony Woodcock) and Northeastern University, where music department chair Anthony de Ritis has been an indefatigable and loyal supporter of GuitarFest almost since its inception.

-Eliot Fisk, Artistic Director of Boston GuitarFest

Guitarrada VII with Pepe Romero and the Harris Guitar Collection

Posted By Connie Sheu, Thursday, April 11, 2013

GUITARRADA VII: PEPE ROMERO AND GEMS FROM THE HARRIS GUITAR COLLECTION AT THE SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC

The Harris Guitar Foundation (HGF) and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music are delighted to announce Guitarrada VII and an exciting new collaboration between HGF and the Conservatory. On April 29 at 7:30 p.m., guitarist Pepe Romero and luthier Richard Bruné join Conservatory guitar faculty and students for an evening of lively conversation and music performed on rare vintage guitars from the Harris Guitar Collection (HGC). Co-hosted by David Tanenbaum, chair of the Conservatory guitar department, and L. John Harris, president of The Harris Guitar Foundation, Guitarrada VII takes place in the Conservatory’s Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall at 50 Oak Street in San Francisco. Now it its seventh year, the annual event is free and open to the public.

The occasion will also celebrate a new collaboration between HGF and the Conservatory that integrates instruments from the Harris Guitar Collection into the guitar department’s curriculum.

"Thanks to the enthusiastic support of the Conservatory and the loyalty of our audiences, Guitarrada has become a popular event at the Conservatory,” says Harris, president of The Harris Guitar Foundation. "Now I’m thrilled to announce that the newly formed Harris Guitar Foundation will make the Harris Guitar Collection available on a regular basis to the guitar students and faculty of the Conservatory for educational purposes, including scholarship, performance and recordings.”

"The Conservatory guitar department,” says Tanenbaum, "is very happy to welcome back Richard Bruné, Pepe Romero and the wonderful Harris Guitar Collection for another evening devoted to the exploration of the guitar's history through the lens of these instruments. In addition, the occasion represents a heartfelt thank you to President Colin Murdoch for fostering the collaboration between the organizations as well as an homage to Pepe, who received an honorary doctorate from the school in 2011.”

This year’s Guitarrada features over a dozen guitars from the Harris Collection that will eventually be on permanent public display at the Conservatory. Special guests Romero and Bruné will deliver their usual fare—exquisite playing by Romero and fascinating lore and scholarship from Bruné. The event will also feature a special performance by Conservatory faculty guitarists Sérgio Assad, Marc Teicholz, Lawrence Farrara and David Tanenbaum.

"We will play together as a quartet for the first time,” says Tanenbaum.” "We chose a piece by Moreno Torroba written for the Romero Quartet to honor Pepe and his family and the beginning of the life of the Harris Guitar Collection on our campus."

In the tradition of previous Guitarradas, Conservatory students will perform on instruments they have selected from the Harris Collection.

Romero appears at Guitarrada in conjunction with a solo concert on April 28 at Herbst Theatre produced by the OMNI Foundation for the Performing Arts in partnership with San Francisco Performances. The HGF and Conservatory are grateful to the OMNI Foundation and Director Richard Patterson for its ongoing support of the Guitarrada series. Tickets for Romero’s solo concert are available at omniconcerts.com or by calling (415) 242-4500 or (650) 726-1203.

Plans for joint projects between HGF and OMNI will be the subject of future announcements.

The Boston Conservatory Revamps Guitar Program

Posted By Connie Sheu, Thursday, March 14, 2013
Boston, MA, March 13, 2013 — The Boston Conservatory has recently re-launched its guitar program with a restructuring of the curriculum, changes in audition requirements, and engagement of additional faculty members. The program offers three possible degrees: a Bachelor of Music, Graduate Performance Diploma, and Master of Music in Guitar Performance. Faculty members include Aaron Larget-Caplan, Berit Strong, and Olav Chris Henriksen, all of whom are active performers in addition to their teaching responsibilities.

"This is an extremely exciting time at The Boston Conservatory,” said Larget-Caplan. "I am honored to be working alongside Berit Strong and Olav Chris Henriksen to create a top-tier conservatory music program for guitar. With our diverse backgrounds, we are looking forward to challenging future students in all genres of music, from all eras.”

Students in the guitar program have ample performance opportunities through The Boston Conservatory’s chamber music program (including groups such as Renaissance consort, world music ensemble and contemporary music); a weekly performance seminar; training and playing in therapeutic music; participating in productions of the Conservatory’s Musical Theater, Dance and Opera Departments; and involvement in concerto and other competitions through the Conservatory and through ASTA (American String Teachers Association)

Recent changes to the curriculum include expanded performance seminars and revamped courses in guitar research and pedagogy. Audition requirements have been increased to include a broader range of eras and more detailed requirements. For more information, visit www.bostonconservatory.edu/music/guitar.

Volterra Project 2013 with Antigoni Goni

Posted By Connie Sheu, Friday, March 08, 2013

It is with great pleasure that I announce the 7th edition of the Volterra Project, Summer Guitar Institute: a special edition.

On August 2, we will meet again in the hills across from the medieval city of Volterra in Tuscany, Italy, for 8 more days of intense work and creative learning in one of the most enchanting and inspiring settings of the world!

This year the Volterra Project will have (just for fun) a title: New York City comes to Volterra

Only for this edition we are breaking our customary rules in two ways
all the teachers will come from New York City
in addition to the usual 10 guitar students we will open the inscription to 4 flute students
This year, in fact, our usual curriculum will be enriched by flute and guitar chamber music. Each guitar student, will exceptionally receive an extra lesson on guitar and flute repertoire while the 4 flautists will have the chance to participate in several chamber music sessions as well as receive a lesson on solo flute repertoire.

I look forward to seeing you all in Tuscany!
Antigoni Goni
Founder and Artistic Director

Remembering John W. Tanno

Posted By Connie Sheu, Thursday, February 21, 2013
John W. Tanno passed away February 15, 2013 at his home in Sacramento, CA. He was 73 years old.

John had a long and distinguished career as a University Librarian at UC Riverside from 1970-2002 and then at UC Davis from 2002 until his retirement in 2006. He was also very active in the Music Department at UCR and taught a Music Bibliography course for 28 years. His love of music stands out as an important part of his life both personally and professionally. He earned his Masters in Music from USC. Among other publications, he wrote two regular columns, "The Guitarist’s Bookshelf,” an annual column appearing in Guitar Review, and "Current Discography” for Soundboard, where he also served as editor from 1976-1980.

He had a particular passion for classical and flamenco guitar. His proficiency as a both a player and a scholar was noted by all who knew him. He would often treat friends and family to a living room performance, an event enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

John’s had a lifetime love affair with books. He took great joy in acquiring new books, whether on Amazon.com or his local used bookstore. He was always happy to discuss his latest read.

He soaked up culture and loved museums, theatre, concerts and film, all of which he sought out while pursuing another great love: travel.

John had a wonderful zest for life and his greatest passion was for his family. He is survived by his loving daughters, Maria-Elena Kinzer and Luisa Tanno, his sister Joyce Hansen, his grandchildren Dylan, Owen and Finley Kinzer, and many dear nieces and nephews.
He did not wish for a memorial service. For those who would like to make a donation in his memory, his family suggests The California State Parks Foundation or The Prostate Cancer Foundation.
