The Distinguished Service Award honors past GFA board members, officers, staff, and others for outstanding, critical and long-term service to the GFA.
The Guitar Foundation of America was formed in 1973 at the National Guitar Convention sponsored by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). The founding members, passionate guitarists from every corner of North America, began a journey which has developed into a remarkable international organization with an expansive reach. Since the 1970's, GFA has published a quarterly journal, Soundboard; established a large archive of scores, books and manuscripts; hosted annual international festivals; commissioned composers of the guitar; since 1982 held the annual GFA International Guitar Convention and Competition which has grown to be one of the most prestigious in the world; and organized the annual GFA winner’s concert tour currently comprised of approximately 50 concerts around the country.
GFA has relied primarily on a volunteer spirit to accomplish many of these goals, with very little funding for paid positions. Many of the founding and early members of GFA served the organization in an entirely volunteer capacity, or in an exponentially greater capacity than their salaries ever covered, for multiple decades. Without their dedication to the instrument and the organization, we would not have our annual convention or competition; we would not have the archives; we would not have Soundboard. The Distinguished Service Award was created to honor those who have selflessly served the GFA in significant ways.
